#1. Respond to one of the quotes to note. Please identify speaker, interlocutor, context, and significance. (Zoe B.)
“I draw because words are too unpredictable. I draw because words are too limited...” ( Alexie 5).

In this quote Junior is thinking to himself while giving some background information about his disabilities to the reader. He’s describing what he does in his free time and why. This quote is important because it shows how Junior has a creative and imaginative mind. He uses his cartoons to show what he feels because he can’t find the words. He believes that anyone can understand a drawing no matter what language people speak. He feels like he can express his feelings more by putting them on paper and showing people instead of using his words. Junior thinks that words don’t always have enough meaning and drawing has more emotion. He says words are unpredictable, meaning he believes they can be misinterpreted by others.
“But when you draw a picture, everybody can understand it.” (Alexie 5)
By using drawings he can communicate more about what he’s feeling and show what he’s thinking. Drawing allows him to escape into his own world, where there aren’t any bullies who can find him and where he can be himself.

  1. Zoe, I think you did a great job of showing what the quote means, and I completely agree on what you said. Here is another quote that explains why Junior likes to draw. "I draw because I want to talk to the world. And I want the world to pay attention to me" (Alexei 6). When Junior says this, it gives a feeling that he wants to stand out, but not by his disabilities. One way to do this is by creating something that everyone can understand, like drawing cartoons. He wants people to know how he's feeling, and he wants them to see his own world exactly how it is, without being misinterpreted.

  2. Junior draws cartoons as a form of escapism for him, his family, and his friends, because living in a cartoon world is better than living in a world of poverty. On page twenty-three Junior says, “I guess a fake life inside a cartoon is a lot better than his real life.” Junior is talking about how he draws cartoons of Rowdy’s dream for Rowdy because he realizes that Rowdy’s real life is even worse than his life. This is because Rowdy gets beaten by his father when he gets drunk, whereas Junior has never even gotten hit by his parents. Junior not only wants to escape his own life, but he wants to help others around him escape their lives too. Junior draws cartoons for himself, his friends, and his family to help them see their dreams and make them forget about the bone-crushing reality they live in.
